We presented a unified, organized front against any legislation that would restrict our access to Upper Red Lake, therefore legislation introduced by Twin Cities activists never even received a hearing in the legislature. This is a major victory, and we are so grateful to each of you for adding your name and making your voices heard. We do know that this fight isn’t yet over for good. Already there are rumors that legislators may need to return later this year to respond to budget changes coming out of Washington. We’ll be on guard to ensure no provisions impacting Upper Red Lake are slipped into legislation if that happens. And the same special interests that pushed for transferring Upper Red Lake to the Red Lake Nation will be back in the State Capitol next year. We’re going to be working to build our coalition and broaden our base of support. But for now at least, we can all rest a little easier.
